Imaged Words & Worded Image

A mail art exhibition curated by David Dellafiora for Field Study International, featuring 170 artists from 25 countries.

Saturday 2nd July, until 12 August 2022.

Imaged Words & Worded Images takes it title from a book edited by Richard Kostelanetz in 1970 which promised "poetic imagery, artful poetry, concrete poetry, and beat wordsmithing" by artists including Claes Oldenburg, John Cage and Merce Cunningham.

The invitation to send visual/text works on paper at A5 size (14.7 x 21cm) or 3D bookworks up to a size of 21x29x25cm was sent out through David's mail art networks in mid 2021 as a collaboration between WordXimage and Field Study.

Mail art has a long history in Australia, and we are delighted that many well known contributors both internationally and from Australia are included in this exhibition.

A MAIL ART INTRO from the Tate Modern site: "Mail art began in the 1960s when artists sent postcards inscribed with poems or drawings through the post rather than exhibiting or selling them through conventional commercial channels. Its origins can be found in Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters and the Italian futurists. But it was the New York artist Ray Johnson who, in the mid 1950s, posted small collages, prints of abstract drawings and poems to art world notables giving rise to what eventually became known as the New York Correspondence School."

DAVID DELLAFIORA is the coordinator of the correspondence art group Field Study International. Through Field Study he produces the assembling publications Field Report, KART, WIPE and ReSite. Educated in the UK in the 80's and relocating to Australia in 1998, David has been active in the mailart community for over 30 years. Dellafiora's own practice includes public art, community-based art and artist books. His artist books are in numerous international collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Tate Britain and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; and the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry now held at the University of Iowa, USA.
